Second case of H5N1 avian influenza found in Russia

Russian officials are reporting another confirmed case of avian influenza at a poultry farm in the southern Russian province of Dagestan. This makes the second time this week a confirmed case of avian influenza has been reported in this region.

“The H5N1 virus was found on a second poultry farm,” a spokeswoman from Russia’s consumer protection agency said.

The current outbreak of the H5N1 strain of bird flu, was identified after tests were performed at Eldama farm, were it was reported that at least 350,000 birds had died between January 25, 2006 and February 1, 2006.

An avian influenza outbreak at another poultry farm in the North Caucasus region was announced on Wednesday by veterinary officials, who said it had been spread by wild birds.
