Dead swan in Wales being tested for bird flu

A swan found on Anglesey this weekend is being tested for bird flu.

The bird is understood to have been discovered on Friday night on the coast near RAF Valley and taken to a government laboratory in either Aberystwyth or Shrewsbury. The results of the tests for the killer H5N1 strain are due tomorrow.

Last night the chief vet for Wales warned it is a question of when, not if, we have our first confirmed case of bird flu, as happened in Scotland this week.

Dr Christianne Glossop said: “Nothing has happened yet but we better be ready for when it does.

“I have heard reports of a bird being tested from Anglesey. We should know by Monday if this bird has the H5N1 strain.
