Serb children given all clear after bird flu scare

Four Serb children from a bird flu-hit area have been cleared of having the dangerous H5N1 strain of the virus after tests, a Serbian epidemiologist said on Monday.

The four come from the southwestern town of Bajina Basta, close to the Bosnian border, where there was a suspected case of the virus in a cockerel. They were put into medical isolation late last week after developing fever or flu-like symptoms.

“We received negative results for all four children from our laboratory in Torlak,” Veljko Djerkovic told Reuters. The children were being discharged from hospital. A total of 33 people from the area were under daily medical supervision. Serbia has detected the deadly H5N1 strain in wild fowl and is waiting for results of the tests on the cockerel.
