Ohio begins tests to clip the wings of avian influenza
Blood samples are now being taken from Ohio’s chicken flocks.
This fall, other tests will be conducted on hundreds of waterfowl and shore birds, mostly in the Lake Erie marshes.
The goal is to safeguard Ohio’s $3.3 billion poultry industry—and ultimately the people who have contact with the birds—from a strain of deadly avian influenza.
Bird flu has not yet been detected in North America, but Ohio’s poultry growers and processors already are taking precautions, while the state’s wildlife officials are finalizing plans for wild bird testing.
