New cases of avian influenza ( bird flu ) in Romania

Romanian authorities said on Sunday that a preliminary test on domestic fowl, in a village in south east romania , showed positive for the bird flu virus. But that further tests were neeeded to determine if it was the H5N1 strain.

“Veterinarians detected suspected avian influenza in the Topalu village in Constanta county,” the agriculture ministry said in a statement. Topalu is around 40 miles (60 KM) north-east of the small Black Sea resort of Navodari, where bird flu was confirmed last Sunday.

Officials said all birds in the yard involved had been culled and samples were sent to a laboratory in Bucharest to determine which strain it was.
