Israel to cull (slaughter and dispose of), up to 500,000 birds

Veterinary officials in Israel are going ahead with the slaughter of hundreds of thousands turkeys and chickens amid bird flu concerns.

The Cabinet devoted its weekly meeting today to the outbreak, while veterinary officials dressed in protective suits continued the systematic slaughter of poultry in four farming communities.

Acting Prime Minister Ehud Olmert (EH’-hood OHL’-murt) has pledged to form a task force within days to handle compensating farmers for their losses. Damage is expected to run into the millions of dollars.
