Death in Shanghai confirmed to be caused by H5N1 bird flu

A 29 year old woman from Shanghai in east China has died from bird flu, the Chinese Ministry of Health confirmed on Friday.

The victim, was a migrant worker in Shanghai. She showed bird flu symptoms of fever and pneumonia on March 13 and died on March 21.

The Shanghai Municipal Center for Disease Control and Prevention said that Li tested positive for H5N1. The municipal health department announced on Thursday that it was a suspected human case of bird flu.

Chinese authorities have put anyone who had close contact with the woman under medical observation. So far none have showed any symptoms associated with the bird flu virus.

It is still unknown how the victim was infected with the disease as there has been no reports on any outbreaks of bird flu among poultry in the city.

Don’t they at least know when she arrived in Shanghai and from where?

I have no doubt that they do. The biggest problem is China’s secrecy when it comes to this sort of thing.

Most if not all of the news out of that country is first filtered by the state before it ever sees the light of day.

In a country with 1.3+ billion people, most in densely populated areas, logic would dictate that the infection rate is a lot higher then they are admitting.

Word has leaked out through quite a few sources that they are in fact covering up their bird flu outbreaks.

In this case I think word will eventually filter out about where this woman “Migrant” came from.
