Confirmed H5N1 bird flu in Afghanistan

Afghan government authorities and the United Nations have confirmed an outbreak of the deadly H5N1 strain of bird flu in Afghanistan.

The infected birds came from the capital Kabul, the city of Jalalabad, and the district of Khogiani, all located in the eastern part of the country.

Samples from the northern city of Kunduz and the southern city of Kandahar were also tested for the virus but test results were negative.

Experts feared that the H5N1 strain of bird flu would eventually reach Afghanistan because of the countries poor health-care infrastructure.
