Birds in Odessa city zoo not infected with the H5N1 strain of avian influenza (bird flu)
Authorities in Odessa, Ukraine said that the birds found dead in the Odessa city zoo did perish from avian influenza, but it is not the highly pathogenic strain of bird flu (H5N1), that caused their deaths.
The Kyiv central laboratory of veterinary research, in a statement released to the press, said that the birds started dying last week. More than 30 died.
The zoo is home to some 400 birds. The remaining birds will be under quarantine until the summer.
