Bird flu kills Indonesian girl, raising death toll to 77

JAKARTA (AP): A 5-year-old girl died from bird flu, the Health Ministry said Wednesday, raising Indonesia’s toll from the virus to 77 - the most of any country.

The child was admitted to a hospital in Surakarta, a city in Central Java province, and died last Thursday, more than a week after she started suffering symptoms, the ministry said in astatement.

Authorities believe she contracted the virus from sick chickens living near her house, said Muhammad Nadhirin, a Health Ministry official.
