Bird flu hits fourth Afghan province
The H5N1 strain of bird flu has been found in pet chickens in a fourth province in Afghanistan, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) said.
Tests in Italy confirmed the virus, which can be fatal for humans, in dead birds found in the northern province of Kapisa, FAO spokesman Assadullah Azhari told Agence France-Presse.
H5N1 has previously been found in the capital Kabul and the eastern provinces of Nangarhar and Logar.
However, no human cases of the disease have been reported in Afghanistan, Azhari said.
Azhari said the laboratory in Italy is also testing suspected cases from Laghman and Parwan provinces.
