Bird flu confirmed in third Afghan province
KABUL (AFX) - The H5N1 strain of bird flu has been confirmed in a third province in Afghanistan, the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization said.
Tests in Italy confirmed that H5N1 was found in birds in the central province of Logar, the FAO said.
The strain had also been found in Kabul and in eastern Nangarhar province on the border with Pakistan.
No human cases of the disease have been reported in the country.
About 11,000 birds have been slaughtered to control the spread of the disease, said Azizullah Usmani, head of the agriculture ministry’s veterinary department.
Most were domestic chickens and turkeys being kept in backyards, he said.
