Bird flu confirmed in Indonesian child’s death

Indonesia’s director of health confirmed that a one year old girl who died Thursday in Jakarta was infected with the H5N1 bird flu virus.

“The baby is positive, according to our local tests,” Director Hariadi Wibisono told local reporters.

The baby, who died after only one day in an infectious disease hospital in the capital, Jakarta, had come into contact with dead poultry, Wibisono said.

Authorities sent samples to a World Health Organization sanctioned laboratory in Hong Kong for confirmation, said Wibisono.
