Albania confirms second case of h5N1 bird flu
Authorities confirmed late Wednesday that the highly pathogenic strain of H5N1 bird flu has been detected in a chicken, local news agencies are reporting.
The second case of the deadly H5N1 bird flu virus in Albania was detected in a chicken in the village of Peza Helms, near Tirana.
Samples that were sent to Weybridge laboratory in Britain tested positive for the H5N1 virus. A 1.8 mile (3 km) quarantine zone has been put up around the area were the chicken was found.
Albania confirmed its first H5N1 bird flu case three weeks ago in the village of Cuke, southern Albania. The area, where more than 2.000 domestic birds have been culled (slaughtered and disposed of), is still under quarantine.
Local residents are still very reluctant to purchase any poultry products, so much so that even cheap chicken meat goes unsold.
