Avian influenza, Bird flu reaches southern russia

On Monday the Emergency Situations Ministry of Russia reported it’s first case of bird flu in Adygeya, a southern republic of Russia. “On February 23, seven chickens died in the village of Severo-Vostochnye Sady in Adygeya’s Maikop District,” the press service said.

A Krasnodar veterinary laboratory conducted the tests which were confirmed to have the bird flu virus. Samples from the dead bird were sent to a central research laboratory in Moscow to determine if it was the deadly H5N1 strain of bird flu.

“The bird flu virus has been detected in wild fowl, including migratory birds, in six Russian regions - the Republics of Kabardino-Balkaria, Daghestan, Chechnya and Kalmykia, and the Krasnodar and Stavropol Territories,” an Agriculture Ministry official said Sunday.
