Austria testing for bird flu

Austria’s Health Ministry said Tuesday that two swans found dead in the southern portion of that country, are strongly suspected of having the H5N1 strain of avian influenza after having been tested for the virus.

If confirmed, these would be Austria’s first cases of the H5N1 strain.

The ministry said, “There is the strong suspicion that the two swans are infected with H5N1. That arose from first laboratory tests,” also adding that samples had been sent to a lab in England for confirmation.
