Another Indonesian H5N1 avian influenza infection
Indonesian officials stated today that a 40-year-old housewife from South Jakarta has been admitted to the Sulianti Saroso hospital for infectious diseases with suspected avian influenza, and is in stable condition.
She told doctors she had been in contact with her neighbor’s sick chickens before coming down with symptoms of pneumonia including a high fever.
Two others suffering symptoms of the virus died at the same hospital on Thursday but local tests have yet to show whether they were infected.
If local tests show positive for the H5N1 strain of avian influenza, they will be sent to a World Health Organization affiliated laboratory in Hong Kong for confirmation.
